The Old Fire Station

oldfirestation

Just look at this gorgeous building close to my house (on the dog walking route). It was an old fire station, built in 1897 and used right up until 1973. After it was no longer required, it was left to go to rack and ruin. Parts fell away leaving the sides exposed to the elements, pigeons made it their home (as did a few homeless people), and plants grew out of the windows. Now, after many months of scaffolding and building works, it has been renovated into flats, and cleaned up again.

I love that it has been rescued, but I do wish that some old buildings could be given back to the community for everyone to use, instead of turning everything into housing……but that’s just me and my idealistic world, haha!

    1. I agree, more buildings should be used in this way….BUT…. if they are priced out of the market for first time buyers, or say, given (not free obviously) over to social housing, etc….then what’s the point? (sorry, mini rant, haha!) But yes, its lovely to see a place with such character being restored for all to enjoy. It certainly makes the place look a bit tidier! πŸ˜€
